Describe an experience that captures why you love Monticello.

A young boy and his father hung back to talk to me after their tour. The father wanted me to know that this was his son’s first trip to Monticello. His son’s name was Thomas Jefferson and he was born on July 4th. The boy enjoyed the tour so much that he wanted to give me what he was wearing around his neck. Thomas had made a “monkey’s fist” (a certain rope used in boating) and he wanted me to have it. I told Thomas I would cherish his gift and wear it often. And I do.
